Meeting Time: 9:30am (Percussion), 10:30am (Brass and Woodwinds)
Age minimum: 3rd grade
With the uncertainty of online instruction, the YYO has decided to combine all beginning/intermediate woodwinds, brass, and percussion students in one class. Students should enroll in this course if they would normally enroll in Bandtastic Winds, Bandtastic Percussion, The Instrumentalists, or Drum Like a Girl. Depending on enrollment, this class will be split into multiple groups according to instruments and/or playing ability. Students will learn individual instrument techniques, practice strategies, music reading, scales, and songs according to their playing level. Our teachers also have some fun, new surprises in store- sign up to find out!

An intermediate string course, students who have taken “Budding Virtuosi” or can bow and pluck both G and D 1 octave scales should enroll in “Overture Strings.” Students will learn more advanced string lessons including dynamics, increased range of notes, up to 5 different scales, and more complex songs/pieces. Students will have group lessons with 2-4 other students. At the end of the semester, students will collaborate in a recorded virtual performance of an orchestra piece!

Age minimum: 3rd grade (excluding previous students)
This course is meant for new beginning string players. Students will learn beginning techniques such as how to hold the instrument and how to make a sound, eventually leading to full scales and songs! Students will have group lessons with 2-4 other students. At the end of the semester, there will be a recorded virtual performance by each section! - - ***If you were enrolled in Budding Virtuosi last year and are under the age of 9, we ask that you please enroll in Budding Virtuosi again. Students that feel ready to advance that are under the age of 9, please reach out to Mr. Edwards at tim@ypsiyouthorch.org to discuss the student’s placement.

This general music class is designed to give students the fundamental musicianship skills to better succeed in instrumental classes in the future. Classes will consist of songs, movement, learning to read music, and explorations of music history and popular music.

The YYO’s youngest students will learn about all of the opposites that make up the music we all know and love! Designed to be a cross between a dedicated music class and a preschool experience, classes will consist of singing, dancing/movement, all kinds of fun musical exploration. This class is intended for students aged 4-5.
ORCHESTRA AND JAZZ STUDENTS
For the YYO’s most advanced students who are ready to play in an ensemble. As of August 15, 2021, we are working to provide in-person instruction to Orchestra and Jazz Ensemble students. We continue to monitor developing public health guidance and are working with the Ypsilanti Community Schools (our partners and landlords for rehearsal spaces) to ensure a safe and compliant learning environment.

Led by the Ypsilanti Youth Orchestra’s Interim Music Director, Mr. Tim Edwards, the Orchestra will prepare and perform an array of repertoire to continue advancing both individual and ensemble skills.

Ms. Speck will be teaching an advanced music appreciation/music history course to any interested orchestra students. High-school-aged (or returning) woodwind, brass, percussion, and string players are all welcome!

Mr. Somers will continue the Jazz Ensemble this semester with a focus in theory, history, and listening. This course is also made available to orchestra students who are interested in learning a different style of music!
